1. Choose the Perfect Location

The location is so important for your proposal. When your friends and family ask you to tell them all about the romance, you don’t want to start the story “We were waiting for our food to arrive at the Maccies drivethrough…”

Over the Christmas period, many venues and outdoor spaces are transformed into enchanting wonderlands of twinkling lights – like they have been decorated just for your proposal! Here are some ideas:

  • At Home: Cosy and intimate, where you are relaxed and feeling yoursef. You might decorate your living room with fairy lights, or a trail of confetti for your partner to follow to find the ring. Sometimes, your own home can be the perfect place.
  • Christmas Markets: The hustle and bustle, festive music, and warm drinks make these places ideal for a proposal. Just try to find a slightly quiet spot as they can be BUSY!!
  • On a Winter Walk: Find a scenic, quiet spot in nature – perhaps a frosty park, or by the seaside – for a romantic, private moment.
  • Under the Tree: Whether it’s your tree at home or a public Christmas tree in your town or city, proposing in front of a beautifully decorated tree is timeless. And how about booking a photographer to capture the moment, so you’ll have a record of the very moment your wedding became a plan!
  • With Family and Friends: If your partner is close to their loved ones, you might want to include them in the moment. The festive season often brings people together, making it the perfect time for a family-filled celebration after the big “yes!”

2. Plan the Details

A successful proposal requires a little planning. Here’s what you need to consider:

  • Timing is Everything: Decide on the right moment. Will you pop the question early on Christmas morning, during a romantic New Year’s Eve dinner, or as the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Day? Choose a moment that’s important to you!
  • Practice What You’ll Say: You don’t need a script, but think about how you’ll express your feelings. Speak from the heart, mentioning why you love them and why you want to spend your life together.
  • Hire a Photographer: Capture the magic of your proposal by hiring a professional photographer to discreetly photograph the moment. Hull-based photographers, like us at Jones Film and Photo, can photograph your proposal, and later your wedding, so you have everything photographed to enjoy for the rest of your lives!

3. Prepare for the Yes (and the Emotions!)

Proposing is an emotional experience, so be prepared for tears, laughter, and maybe a few surprises.

  • The Ring (Optional!): If you’re opting for a traditional ring proposal, ensure the ring suits your partner’s style. Not sure? Propose with a placeholder ring and let them choose later.
  • No Ring? No Problem!: Rings aren’t the only way to propose. Consider using another piece of jewellery if rings aren’t their thing, or if you prefer to choose later. Or something completely different – if you have kids, how about getting them to make a friendship bracelet, or even wear a t-shirt that reads “will you marry me” to include them!
  • Consider Their Reaction: If your partner doesn’t love being the centre of attention, keep it private. On the other hand, if they love to be the main character, they may prefer a public proposal.

4. Ideas for What to Say

Not sure how to find the right words? Start with these tips:

  • Be Personal: Talk about your lives together so far together, what your partner means to you, and how they’ve changed your life.
  • Express Your Love: Share why you want to marry them and your hopes for your future together.
  • Keep It Simple: You don’t need a long speech. A few heartfelt words followed by the big question – “Will you marry me?” is all that’s needed!

5. Tips for Both Brides and Grooms-to-Be

Proposing isn’t just for the groom – many future brides also choose to take the lead. Here are some empowering tips for both:

For Grooms:

  • Understand your partner’s dream proposal. Are they hoping for an extravagant gesture, or do they prefer something quiet and intimate?
  • Practice getting down on one knee if you’re planning to stick to tradition – it’s harder than it looks in bulky winter clothing, in the mud!

For Brides:

  • Forget about “rules” or traditions – your love story is yours to write. If you’re ready to propose, go for it!
  • Incorporate your personality into your proposal. Speak from the heart, buy a gift they will love, and savour the moment.

6. The Perfect Moment

The best proposals happen when the moment feels right, so trust your instincts. Here are some “perfect” moments to look out for:

  • When the First Snow Falls: There’s nothing quite as magical as snow-covered surroundings to create a dreamy atmosphere. But we are in the UK, so you might be waiting forever for skies that are something other than grey and drizzly… frost looks and feels just as magical. Especially first thing in the morning!
  • At a Family Gathering: Propose during a family meal or when exchanging gifts to make it extra memorable.
  • Under the Stars: Step outside during a quiet moment, look at the night sky, and let the magic happen. Cold, crisp nights, with a clear sky and a blanket to cuddle under, sounds perfect to us!

Final Tip: Celebrate Afterwards!

Once your partner says “yes,” take some time to take in the moment before letting the celebrations begin. Whether you rush to call family and friends, open a bottle of bubbly, or take some photos together, this is your time to enjoy your first moments as an engaged couple.

The festive season is filled with opportunities to create special memories of your perfect proposal. With a little bit of planning, your proposal will be everything you dreamed of – and more.
